It is always amazing to start a conversation around TEDTalks with a group of TED fans. The conversation goes in unexpected directions when we share diverse opinions. The January TEDxTampaBaySalon was no exception. Tre Amici was standing room only as people from around Tampa Bay and beyond packed into the hip coffee shop in Ybor City to witness Jon Dengler tell his amazing story of sharing and generosity in an age of excess and materialism. Jon’s passionate talk reminded us that it is people, and not “stuff”, that has real value. Through intentional living, Jon and his community live together without air conditioning and other comforts to reduce their carbon footprint. Best of all, Jon’s stories started halfway across the world, transplanted themselves here and now they are sprouting here in Tampa. Thanks, Jon.
Thanks to the Advanced Medical Practices Interest Group and Tampa Florida Attractions for helping us spread the word. Thanks to the hard-working crew at Tre Amici for making us comfortable, serving awesome food and drinks, and making it look easy with a crowd of 60 people crammed into every spot in the place! What a fun way to begin the holiday week! The TEDxTampaBaySalon November event theme was Crowdsourcing, and everyone enjoyed sharing their personal stories. After screening talks by Clay Shirkey and Eric Whitacre, animated discussions led perfectly into our crowdsourcing activity. We all divided up into teams with the intention of creating team-based art. Then teams swapped their “masterpieces” for another teams art and added even more detail. The resulting fun, interesting, and funny pictures truly made us smile. Crowdsourcing is no only a powerful way to generate new ideas, solve problems, and bring people together, it is also fun! Thanks to everyone who participated.

TEDxTampaBay is happy to spread the love about all of the other cool TEDx events happening in the Sunshine State. At least two Florida TEDxYouth Day events are happening the weekend starting November 19, A TEDWomen livescreen is being hosted by TEDxMIA on December 1, and TEDxMIA has an upcoming event on December 16. Informal TEDxTampaBaySalon discussion-based events happen monthly.
