TEDxTampaBayChange Highlights

TEDxTampaBayChange, which took place on Thursday, April 5, 2011 at the beautiful Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fl, brought together thinkers and doers from around the Tampa Bay area and beyond. The attendees were treated to a live stream of TEDxChange from Berlin, which featured talks from global citizens changing the world. Over our delicious boxed lunches in the delightful Poynter dining hall, we exchanged ideas with people we just met, made new friends, and interesting new connections. Our local presenters challenged our current models of thinking about ourselves, our medical system, and our food. Michelle Royal and Hunter Payne worked tirelessly to graphically facilitate the entire event as it happened. The result was a colorful and stunning graphical representation of the day’s talks. What an amazing day of global ideas and thought-provoking discussions.

Thanks to all of our volunteers, including Celesta, Stan, David, and Gary. Thanks to the Poynter Institute for being such gracious and thoughtful hosts. Thanks to Michelle and Hunter for adding so much color and interest to the event. Thanks to our sponsors Tampa Florida Attractions and Stehlik Foto for your generous donation of services. Thanks to Kathyrn Cox, our on stage host, for seamlessly managing the day from the stage. Finally, we appreciate the passion and commitment our presenters made to sharing their ideas TED-style!

Master Chorale of Tampa Bay Commissioned TED Presenter Eric Whitacre’s Lux Aurumque

Eric Whitacre presented at TED in 2010 to talk about the challenges of conducting a virtual chorus of individuals from around the world. The piece, channeling the power of the human voice, is hauntingly beautiful.  In fact, fans who watch the video are often moved to tears. As it turns out, there is a Tampa connection to the very piece highlighted in Eric’s TED Talk.  In 2000, The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay commissioned Eric to write the piece Lux Aurumque. In fact, fans can purchase the CD containing the Master Chorale’s performance of the song on the Master Chorale website.

Founded in 1979, the Master Chorale of Tampa Bay is committed to advancing the art of choral music by performing great works of the past, commissioning and performing new literature and sharing the joy and power of choral music with new and existing audiences and singers.

Thanks to everyone who joined us on Monday, June 20th, 2011 at Tre Amici for TEDxTampaBaySalon. TEDTalks always inspire deep conversations, and our event was no exception. One of the goals of the eventing was to form a small team to participate in the 2011 TEDPrize winner’s project, the Inside Out project. Attendees engaged, sometimes heatedly, in a lively discussion for almost an hour before solidifying an idea for the Inside Out project. We’ll provide more details as the project evolves, but the project is currently code named “Ground Up”. Every attendee actively participated in the discussion. That’s what a TEDx Salon event is all about!

TEDxTampaBaySalon

TEDxTampaBaySalon is a free, monthly gathering where TED fans can converge to screen and discuss a few TED Talks.  Anyone interested in sharing big ideas is welcome to attend. Check us out on the third Monday of every month from 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM at Tre Amici at the Bunker in Ybor City.

Currently, we’re working to build a group to participate in JR’s TED Prize wish.

If you aren’t familiar with Tre Amici (or the Bunker) in Ybor City, take this opportunity to check it out!  The Bunker is an historic building with a long history as a meeting place.  Tre Amici is continuing this tradition. Tre Amici’s philosophy makes The Bunker a natural fit for TEDxTampaBay community nights.  Tre Amici carries organic and fair trade products, supports local artists, and fosters open discourse through community engagement.  Along with plenty of soft, comfortable chairs, nice round tables, free wi-fi, and a flat screen TV, they’ll keep the kitchen open and will be selling delicious sandwiches, salads, coffee, beer, wine, and more. So, whether you want to continue the conversation from TEDxTampaBay 2011 or you’re new to TEDx, come out and meet others who are passionate about sharing big ideas. Hopefully, you’ll meet new people you might not meet anywhere else.
